Satar
The word Satar means,the leading instrument’in Uighur language.It is made of the Wood of apricot
and mulberry trees.It is about 140centimeters long and it is one of the leading bowed instruments in Uighur
orchestras.In has one main steel string and thirteen additional strings to make echoes.Eighteen rubber bands
are tied to its handle to make tones and it is played by pressing the tones with the left hand and strumming
the strings with the boW on the right hand.When it is played,it is positioned on the lap of the left leg.
Satar has soft,melodic sound and it is the main instrument in the performance of Muqam.It plays an
importaant role during the prelude of Muqam.Its adjustment is as follows:
The main string is adjusted to cl and other strings are adjusted respectively in its order to c,c,d,f,g,
c1,d1,e1,g1,a1,c2,a2.There are different ways of adjustments among people as well.
Satar was developed on the baSiS of Tambur. It iS made of the Wood of walnut tree.It haS an o—
val—shaped head whiCh makes echoes.On the surface of its head,Sheep skin is attached.The boW is made of
twined bristles of horse tails.TheTurks used this instrument long ago.
