1 happening between two or more people who deal directly with each other rather than through another person:
Technical support is offered on a person-to-person basis.
2 (especially AmE) (of a telephone call) made by calling the OPERATOR (= a person who works at a telephone exchange) and asking to speak to a particular person. If that person is not available, the call does not have to be paid for:
