Kashgar Rawab
Among Uighur musical instruments,Rawab is the most common one and it can be the only
representative one.Its structure is simple and convenient to use.And it can be played on the stage,during
the labor hour,on a trip to enjoy its melodic sound.When we play it,we put its head between our right
shoulder and right hand arm.It can be played in any position,sitting or standing even while walking.Rawab
consists of ear,handle and head.On its head a pair of sheep horns are installed and they add certain beauty
to its overall look.In early times,on the surface of Rawab the skin of horse or donkey is used.NoW snake
skin is used instead of them.Rawab is usually made of the wood of walnut,apricot and phoenix tree.
There are three kinds of it,namely oyma Rawab,Dolan Rawab and Shepherd Rawab.Besides,there
are new kinds of Rawab called Chaplima Rawab and Bass Rawab.Twined string of sheep or goat bowel is
used on ancient Rawab,but now steel string is used.
On the handle of Rawab over twenty。knots(tunes)are tied.Its head is a half sphere carved out of wood
and snake skin is attached to its face.It has six to seven steel strings and the first string is used to play the
basic melody and others are used to make other sound and echoes.Rawab has loud,lively sound and it is
about ninety centimeters long.The ancient Rawab had three strings.The oval face of Rawab was decorated
with beautiful fretwork using bones or plastics.These kinds of Rawab are mostly used in Kashgar and thus
Called KaShgar Rawab.
