Barbab
Barbab was a stringed instrument which was invented by our ancestors in Kuqa.Barbab was widely
used among Uighur people before Islam came to this area.
The way of playing Barbab was reformed by the famous Barbab player Pilol who lived in Kashgar
during the early times of Tang Dynasty.The way of playing it by holding with a slope was changed to
holding it venically.In the beginning,aplectrum was used to play it and later fingers were used to play.
Barbab was made of the Wood of phoenix tree.Its length is about seventy to eighty centimeters and it is
held venically in the bosom and played by pressing the tunes with left hand and picking the stings with right
hand fingers.NoW in our country the most commonly used Barbab has four strings with crooked handle.Its
sound range iS between A to e3.
Barbab was called Hu Pipa(Uighur Barbab)and there were two kinds ofit.During Sui and Tang
dynasty,Barbad spread to Japan,Korea,Burma and Vietnam and its earliest kind is preserved in Japan.

with right hand fingers and pressing the tones with left hand.There are two kinds of .One of them has a
crooked handle with four stings and the other has five strings.There are pictures Of them in all the caves of
Kizil Kaga,Kumtura and Bizeklik Thousand Caves
